Dedicated to the Medici Saints Cosma and Damiano, the church, even though of modest dimensions, is an interesting eighteenth century monument of the town. It was used for more than two centuries by the Confraternita della Santissima Concezione, also called dei Nobili of the Nobles); which, founded in the 1600s, carried out the role as a link between the noble classes and the clergy. The ancient church of Saint Cosma and Damiano, cited in documents from the 16th and 17th centuries, collapsed in 1722.
The construction of the new building started in 1724 and in 1731 it as still not complete. We learn from the description provided by the Regio Tavolaro (royal architect or engineer) Pietro Vinaccia that at that time the vault was not yet covered. It was completed in the successive years and decorated with stuccoes after 1750.
The building presents a characteristic hexagonal layout with two entrances on the facade, between which a frescoed niche is situated with the image of two saints that bear the ‘palm of the martyr’ and the Gospel.
Internally, the main altar hosts a canvas painting of the Medici Saints and the Immaculate Virgin. This work of art represents one of the few paintings in the Salento in which the Medici Saints are depicted together with the Immaculate Virgin.
The lateral altar hosts an eighteenth century canvas depicting the Virgine del Carmine who saves the souls in Purgatory with the Scapular.
