Votive column crowned with a statue of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel

The present day votive column with statue of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel atop was moved to its current site in 1895; more or less at the same time as the development of the villa comunale (municipal park). Its original position was in piazza IV novembre (also previously known as piazza Municipio), and it was erected in 1855 by the people of Mesagne as a sign of devotion thanks to the town avoiding the worst of a dangerous cholera epidemic that had affected the whole province. The original positioning of the column and the statue in piazza IV novembre was not particularly well received; the historian Antonio Profilo in his writings Vie piazze vichi e corti di Mesagne of 1894 gave a very critical judgement of it.
